The first time I ate Edamame at a friend's house, I was very rude.

I think I snarfed nearly the entire bowl down all by myself.

Those were some *good* beans--still slightly warm, salty, and my friend's mother gave us all glasses of cold beer to go with.  It doesn't get much better on a hot summer day, let me tell you:-)

Japanese cucumbers are rather smaller than the ones I always see in the US, but no matter.  I think this can be made with either kind, though you may need a little more oomph and/or a heavier rolling pin.  Shovel would work fine, too.

We got to go because baseball practice was cancelled Saturday and Sunday on account of rain.  Typhoon, to be exact.  The second one of the season, already--and rather too early.

So, I had to go to the drugstore to buy a new thermometer (or a "tempehchuu", as my kids call it;-)...the other one was lost and I was pretty sure Cici was running a fever this morning (yup--38.7.  Eek.)

Gobo (Burdock Root...Arctium lappa) and Asparagus


A recipe today for one of my favorite vegetables--Gobo, Burdock root in English.

Kinpira Gobo (I'll post that recipe the next time I make it:-)) is the most common way to eat that looong brown root, and it's also my kids' favorite.  But I was making Gobo and Ham Salad today, so I'll just put this up first.

We haven't had much rain so far this year, but we're getting it now.  I'm sitting here listening to it pour outside, which it's been doing since about this time last night and looks to continue doing 'til about this time tomorrow night.  The kids walked to school this morning in rain boots, carrying umbrellas.

Oh yes, indeed-- see?  Laundry pinches, for hanging things over my laundry poles and clipping them in place so they don't blow down on the ground.  I hate having to haul down four flights of stairs to get stuff that's blown down there.  At least now, though, I can usually get one of the kids to do it;-))

Happy Children's Day!


5/5, May fifth, is Children's Day--the time of year you see undulating carp streamers hanging off balconies or strung across rivers.  Koinobori (Koi-- carp, nobori-- streamer) are actually windsocks painted with eyes and fins and scales and shaped tails to resemble the giant Koi that fight their way back upstream every spring.

Tsutsuji Fair at Komuroyama Park-- Azaleas in brilliant bloom...









It's "Golden Week" here in Japan-- so called because there are five holidays that are nearly back-to-back so that most people get a week off for travel or visiting family.  We went to O-Baasan's house near the city of Ito down on the Izu Peninsula-- and it's Azalea Time.  More about that tomorrow:-)

...And this is exactly why I can't get *anything* done.  That up there is the biggest spider fossil ever found (thanks, Alice!!).  Not just any old spider, either.  I took one look at the name and said, "Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Nephila!!"

There's nothing much to see in this video because the Japanese Bush Warbler is notoriously difficult to spot since he's tiny (about 15cm long) and drab (he's nearly the same color as the leaves and branches).  You're far more likely to hear than to see him.  This is his springtime breeding song--doesn't he sing beautifully?  He's sure to have the ladies swooning...;-))

Sakura, sakura  (cherry blossom, cherry blossom)

...but of course, you knew that.  Namazu (catfish) anciently symbolized disorder, then gradually a specific kind of disorder-- earthquakes.  The rumbling and shaking of an earthquake was said to be caused by thrashing catfish deep below in the mud (well-- it makes a certain amount of theoretical sense... sort of... vaguely... in a folklore-ish kind of way).

An 8.9 quake just hit off the coast of Sendai, a city about 30 or 40 miles north of Tokyo.  A 30ft tsunami has hit the coast. I was talking to my husband about three hours before it happened.  He just happened to be at home today instead of in Tokyo--Teddy had a cold, so he stayed home.

Nabe is almost my favorite thing ever to eat in the winter.  A warm, simple dish with a simple name--"Nabe" just means "pot".
